For decades, we’ve been taught that weight loss comes down to the simple idea of “calories in versus calories out”. That is, simply burn more calories than you consume, and the pounds will melt off. If you are trying to lose weight, then you know that it’s not that simple—or that easy.
Our bodies react very differently with calories from different sources, they may go through similar digestive processes, but the biochemical reactions they trigger can be completely different.
Australasia’s leading nutrition specialist and weight loss expert states that consuming 1000 calories of broccoli compared to 1000 calories of a fizzy drink has a completely different reaction in the body. A few of the reactions that the fizzy drink will cause is a spike in your blood glucose levels, stimulation of insulin which is a chemical that signals the body to store weight and store fat, raised triglycerides (essentially fat in your blood), and Leptin, one of the hormones involved in appetite regulation, is blocked. On the contrary if you were to consume 1000 calories from broccoli – a high fibre option that barely registers an effect on your blood glucose, you don’t trigger the same biochemical reaction at all.
When choosing the best foods to eat, focus on consuming natural whole foods full of nutrients and avoid packed and processed foods. If you are consuming foods from the earth, you shouldn’t have to focus on their caloric value.
