In recent years there has been an influx of energy drinks hitting the shelves. A 3pm energy slump can often see you reaching for the nearest V, Red Bull or another coffee – but is this the best way to fuel your body?
Many foods can provide energy more naturally, thanks to being packed with vitamins and minerals such as B12, magnesium, zinc, iron and Vitamin C.
Nuts such as almonds, walnuts, pecans and cashews contain protein for endurance and coenzyme Q10, a nutrient that helps produce energy inside our cells. This combination makes them an ideal choice for both a quick energy jolt and long-term endurance. Pumpkin seeds are also a winning choice due to being full of magnesium, which helps convert food into energy. Leafy greens such as spinach and kale are also rich in magnesium.
If you’ve already had an afternoon snack yet still don’t feel alert, try a glass of water with lemon (for added Vitamin C) which will prevent dehydration that can sap metabolism and energy levels. Black tea and green tea both contain caffeine but they’ve also got the amino acid L-theanine which can increase alertness and memory.
